Summary

The module Science of Materials allows students to know the major families of materials (metals, ceramics, polymers) through their properties and behaviors. The different classes of materials are defined on the basis of the structure of matter. The mechanical, electrical, thermal and chemical behaviors of solids are studied within each class. After defining the properties of the solids, they are measured. From the study of the behavior and the measurements of properties, the student is able to identify a material. Main families of industrial materials are discussed to allow the student to choose a simple material for a defined application.

Educational goals

The different classes of materials: o Knowledge of the different classes of materials with reference to their chemical structure, o Knowledge of the mechanical, electrical, thermal and chemical properties as well as the economic characteristics of each class, o Study of mechanical behavior and measurement of properties o Identification of materials from the measured properties. Phases and phase diagram for metallic materials: o Phase diagrams, o Formation of microstructure during solidification, o Observation of microstructure, o Application to industrial materials, iron and steel, Study of link microstructure-mechanical properties
