Summary

The objective of this teaching is to transmit to students the basic notions of metrology. Whether in practical teaching or later in company, learning to master the measurement processes and evaluating the quality of the results produced is essential. Uncertainty is one of the essential indicators of the quality of a measurement. As part of a very practical approach, the teaching will be mainly dedicated to it.

Educational goals

- Knowledge of the basic vocabulary of metrology, - Rounding rules, significant digits, presentation of measurement results, - Quality indicators of a method, of a measuring instrument: reliability, accuracy, accuracy, etc. - Repeatability (conditions of, standard uncertainty of), reproducibility (conditions of, standard uncertainty of), intermediate precision, - Verification of measurement accuracy using a control standard, - Control of the acceptability of results under repeatability conditions, - Intra/inter-laboratory study, statistical tests for the detection of outliers (Cochran on variances, Grubbs on means), - Experimental error: systematic error (measurement bias) and random error, - Uncertainty, standard uncertainty, combined standard uncertainty, expanded uncertainty, - Determination and estimation of the different components of uncertainty on the result of a measurement (5M method), law of propagation of uncertainties, - Estimation of uncertainties by the type A method, by the type B method

Sustainable development goals

Knowledge control procedures

Continuous Assessment
Comments: The knowledge and skills acquired will be evaluated during the second practical work session. Intermediate evaluations (quizzes, etc.) as part of continuous monitoring may also be carried out to verify the acquisition of the knowledge transmitted and skills targeted.

Online resources

- The materials presented during the teaching as well as the booklet “Metrology: measurements and uncertainties in analytical chemistry” are available on Moodle - Video capsules Good laboratory practices (Moodle).

Pedagogy

Teaching will take place in the form of tutorials, in the computer room, followed by two application sessions and an evaluation session in the practical work room. During the tutorials, the Excel spreadsheet software will be used in the context of numerous applications and examples used to illustrate the different notions introduced and the methods approached.
