Summary

The teaching is aimed at enabling engineering students to acquire and use the notions of chemical kinetics: establish rate laws, calculate kinetic parameters such as the order of the reaction and the rate constant, understand the reaction mechanisms and identify the factors influencing the rate of the chemical reaction (temperature, concentration, diffusion and ionic strength in the liquid phase, ...). Notions on kinetic theories of elementary reactions (elementary collision theory and activated complex theory) are also presented. Finally, the kinetic aspects of heterogeneous catalysis are covered (adsorption, desorption and surface reaction).

Educational goals

Acquisition of advanced knowledge in chemical kinetics: main kinetic theories to interpret an experiment and apply them to the calculation of a rate constant To know the main approximation methods in chemical kinetics (related to the mathematical resolution of differential equations) Determination of reaction mechanisms in kinetics and heterogeneous catalysis

Sustainable development goals

Knowledge control procedures

Continuous Assessment
Comments: A first written test of 1 hour following the introductory self-training module. A second written test of 1h30 at the end of the face-to-face course.

Online resources

Course and exercise booklets.

Pedagogy

The teaching is given in the form of: i) self-training module where definitions and generalities are reviewed in autonomy, ii) lecture (12 hours) and iii) tutorials (4 hours) directly related to the course. Progressive difficulty of the course's application exercises.
