Summary
The course aims to broaden students' knowledge of materials to include the mechanical aspect.
The mechanical test methods used to assess the behaviour of materials, plasticity and fracture are presented.
The mechanical response from the test will be commented on briefly by making the connection with the material's microstructure.
The course comprises three main parts:
- Concepts of stress and deformation ￜ the main loading modes (tension, compression, torsion, bending, shear force)
- Mechanical tests to characterise the plasticity of materials (hardness, monotonic tension, compression, creep)
- Mechanical tests to characterise the fractures of materials (resilience, tenacity, fatigue)
Educational goals
At the end of this course, engineering students will be able to:
- describe the most important methods and techniques used for testing and characterising materials
- choose the most appropriate test method based on the material and the property to be highlighted
- read and interpret a material sheet (commercial, research, etc.)
- recognise a classic method of material fracture
