Summary
Upon arrival at the school in semester 5, engineering students take a test to determine their level, which is used to divide them into two groups, including a refresher group. From semester 7 onwards, they are generally put into a single group at a high but very disparate level, which requires a teaching method that is constantly adapting. Regardless the students' level, the main aim of the courses is to make students operational: develop self-confidence, favour a pragmatic approach, and communicate easily. In addition to continuing German in a group at a high level, the Chemical Engineering course offers students not studying German the chance to start German in semester 5 as a "new second language" in order to allow them to seize many opportunities (internships/exchanges/employment). After the first year in semester 5 and 6 (and a study trip to Leverkusen and Cologne at the end of semester 6), these students are strongly encouraged and given assistance to do an internship in a German-speaking country. Semesters 7 and 8 aim to cultivate the cultural and linguistic tools of beginner students so that they can complete their internship under the best possible conditions.
Educational goals
For advanced levels (B1/B2/C1): - Become (more) operational in the five skills of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (oral and written comprehension, oral and written expression, oral interaction), but especially in oral interaction and expression - Students choose to validate level B2 or C1 through official certifications. The second external certification session will take place during semester 8. - Develop the ability to integrate into a professional environment, with the thematic focus of semester 7 being the world of work, business and interculturality in the workplace. - Acquire more scientific and technical German notions in the field of chemistry - Continuation of personalised assistance in finding an internship via individual meetings. For beginners: - Acquire an A2/1 level in the five skills of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, favouring oral interaction and expression - Prepare students before they leave for an internship in a German-speaking country, allowing for a two- to three-month immersion, within the context of the target language (the vocabulary used in chemistry laboratories is briefly covered)
