Summary

There will be two safety practical work sessions. The first practical work session proposes using differential reaction calorimetry to assess and quantify a thermal runaway. The second practical work session focuses on assessing the fire resistance performance of intumescent paint applied to a steel plate and analysing paint degradation products as it decomposes under isothermal conditions.

Educational goals

At the end of these practical works sessions, students should: - Be able to assess the potential danger of small-scale chemical reactions using calorimetry in order to extrapolate the parameters needed to carry out a large-scale process - Be able to analyse gases emitted during decomposition using IR spectroscopy in a qualitative and quantitative manner in order to assess their toxicity - Be able to take contactless temperature measurements (infrared pyrometer) in order to be able to characterise the performance of materials subject to thermal stress - Understand the influence of different parameters on heat transfers when materials are exposed to a heat flow

Continuous Assessment
Comments: Students are assessed during the session on their involvement, motivation and exchanges with the teacher on the concepts covered. Students may request a sheet of the results at the end of the session.
